So, I always like to see where other people work and live-it's just one of those things. My guilty pleasure? I like driving through neighborhoods after the sun has set and you can see into peoples' homes. I suppose I am a design voyeur...I could care less about what the people are doing; I want to see their decor!! So, I thought I would invite you into my home for a glimpse of some of my favorite things!
After my divorce in 2006 and subsequent move back to my hometown of Austin, TX, I fell in love with this house after looking for several weeks. I walked in and just knew this one would be my home. Lots of light, hardwood floors, recessed doorways in niches and art niches throughout the house. I painted the entire house in soft blues, greens and beiges and accented with a yummy chocolate brown. I had no furniture except for our beds and a kitchen set. I came across this printer's cabinet while antiquing one day and fell in love. I watched it for a year and was finally able to put it on layaway after I was finally earning enough to pay my bills. We had to remove the front door to get it in the house, but it was worth the effort! Again, no furniture in the living room, but I figured I could buy a couch any time...this was a once in a lifetime deal! So, I store my odds and ends in one side, and my jewelry makings in the other.
This is the large art niche in the front room...
I came across this old mantle in my favorite shop in the world, Uncommon Objects, and bought it without measuring anything...luckily, it fit perfectly! Those are metal clarinets in the bottom space ( I played and hated the clarinet in jr. high...I wanted to play the flute!), and a magnificent clock case on the top shelf. All were purchased at Uncommon Objects...
This is another art niche by the front door. I made the doll in a class by Tom and Ramona Ashman and found the wonderful little cabinet at the Austin Citywide Garage Sale...
I collected metal channel letters from neon signs for several years and put them up on the wall when I moved in. Yes, I finally got a couch...my husband, Paul, bought it for me when we were dating... The letters run down the wall between the living and dining space, creating a nice flow between the two spaces.
Paul and I bought this little Victorian cabinet when spending a romantic weekend in Gruene, TX. The incredible sculpture on top is by Dan Essig and the bird in the corner is by Jim Mullan.
Paul bought this incredible piece by Jay Long for our first anniversary. It is entitled "The Gardener" and it hangs over the refrigerator in the kitchen area. I am an avid gardener, so it was very fitting. We get incredible light in the kitchen due to the huge skylight. I love that my house's open floor plan allows me to see most everything from any part of the house. I can sit on the sof a and look over to see this amazing art.
Next time you come over, I will show you a bit of how I work and some shots of my studio. Have a great week!
what an enchanting place to live! i'm quite envious of that printer's cabinet...such wonderful storage!

I love seeing other's decor and studios. Your's is great, I'm always pleased when I see someone else has a love for "stuff", and I am so envious of the printer's cabinets! Glad to have found your blog (Something Sublime).

Oh that cabinet was a definite must...I so want one. I saw one that was not as lovely as yours but the price tag was more than I could justify. I love seeing your mess...keeps it real for all of us.
Welcome to blogland.

I love the cabinets and the letters on the wall. I love seeing other peoples decor. It's so inspiring. I met you briefly at Art & Soul this year. I think it was Nina who introduced us. Nice to see you have a blog. I came by way of Deryn's blog.

Stumbled across your blog after reading the ETSY piece on Sunny Haralson (Oh, by the way, "you complete her!"). Your art is fabulous. Then I click over to your blog and discover that my particular voyeuristic habit might just be more common than I thought -- I love looking in thru the windows of a turn-of-the-century home to see the architecture and styling. Thanks for the peek into yours -- it's always great to be invited in for a closer look. I'll be back!
